Full Route

  1. Leave Broomfields by the footpath to the left of the all weather pitches; and continue to the end of Caversham Close which the footpath runs into.
  2. Turn Left onto Broom Avenue and cross the roundabout; continue in the same direction on what is now Witherwin Avenue. The road drops away in front of you, and as it starts to climb after the bridge, take the footpath on the left into the Millennium Wood.
  3. After approx.300m the footpath forks, take the path to the right going uphill, after approx. 150m at the next junction of footpaths again take the path to the right going uphill.
  4. At the top of the hill cross the style (MP1) and turn left onto Lumb Brook Road and continue for approximately 200m.
  5. As the road bends to the left, take the obvious footpath to the right through the trees, this bends right then left and at the end of the trees bends left again, (MP2) eventually bringing you to Broad Lane with the Cricket Club on your left.
  6. Cross Broad Lane and continue in the same direction on the obvious footpath, after approx. 200m this brings you out onto Church Lane.
  7. Turn right onto Church Lane and take care on the cobbles and uneven pavement.
  8. Once you cross the canal, follow the footpath down onto the tow path. (MP3)(Cut Off Number Three) Going Left you now follow the tow path for approx. 2.5 miles and will pass under Knutsford Road after approx. 600m, and Cliffe Lane almost immediately afterwards.
  9. After approx 800m more there is a small unnamed footbridge (MP4b), another 250m brings you to Halfacre Lane, (MP4c) (Cut Off Number One) which is followed after approx. a kilometer by the Thelwall Viaduct.
  10. Approx. 600m after the viaduct you pass under only one more bridge, Camsley Lane, before coming off the canal at the Barsbank Lane bridge (MP4d) another 400m further on.
  11. Turn left and run away from the canal for approx. 100m until you reach the point where the Transpennine Trail crosses Barsbank Lane.
  12. Turn left onto the trail, you will now follow this well made and obvious path all the way back to Grappenhall approx. 2.5 miles (The trail signposts this as 'Latchford Locks' and is the end of the off road section of this part of the trail). You will once more pass under the viaduct after approx. 800m.
  13. On reaching the end of the trail you come out onto Bradshaw Lane (MP5), turn right, then left when you come to Thelwall New Road at the Locks.
  14. Follow Thelwall New Road until you reach the swing bridge(MP6).
  15. Turn right and cross the bridge, having done so there is a footpath on the left again signposted as part of the Transpennine Trail.

Cut Off 1 - Run of about 7 miles

  1. 1. Immediately after passing under the Halfacre Lane Bridge take the footpath on the left signposted (MP4c) 'Transpennine Trail'. This is a very short path and after only a very few metres it joins the Transpennine Trail.
  2. Turn left onto the trail, you will now follow this well made and obvious path back towards Grappenhall (Cut Off Number Two) approximately one mile, The trail signposts this as 'Latchford Locks' and is the end of the off road section of this part of the trail).
  3. On reaching the end of the trail you come out onto Bradshaw Lane (MP5), turn right, and then left when you come to Thelwall New Road at the Locks.
  4. Follow Thelwall New Road until you reach the swing bridge (MP6).
  5. Turn right and cross the bridge, having done so there is a footpath on the left again signposted as part of the Transpennine Trail.
  6. Follow this behind the garage and down to the Ship Canal leading back towards the Stockton Heath swing bridge, passing under the Cantilever Bridge on your way.
  7. At the end of the footpath, as you come down a short incline, turn left and climb up a second incline to bring you out onto London Road.
  8. Turn left and cross the swing bridge, then continue through Stockton Heath. At the cross roads continue straight on up London Road, over the Bridgewater Canal.
  9. After the London Bridge pub turn left into Dingleway.
  10. When you reach St Monica's Church turn Right into Broomfields Road, and on into Broomfields Leisure Centre directly ahead.

Cut Off 2 - Run of about 6 miles

  1. Leave the Trail where Stockport Road passes above, take the short path up on the right and join Stockport Road.
  2. Turn right and follow Stockport Road to the traffic lights at the Springbrook Pub.
  3. Cross over and follow what is now Chester Road until you come to the traffic Lights at Lumb Brook Road.
  4. Turn left and pass under the bridge, then after approximately 150m turn right onto Bridge Lane, running uphill past the houses and shops.
  5. Turn right on to Dingleway, then left at the Church onto Broomfields Road, continue straight on into Broomfields via the main gate.

Cut Off 3 - Run of about 4 miles

  1. Going right follow the canal back in the direction of Stockton Heath.
  2. Continue along the tow path passing under Church Lane and running parallel to Chester Road.
  3. After approx 1.5 miles take the steps down to join Lumbrook Road (MP4a) Turn left onto Lumbrook Road passing under the canal.
  4. Cross the road and turn right up Bridge Lane.
  5. At the top of the hill, passed the shops turn right onto Dingleway then left at the church.
  6. Continue straight on into Broomfields by the main gate.
