This is an annual event for club members. It takes place in the summer and normally lasts from Friday to Sunday. It is a long relay run where runners are paired off based on similar ability. The format is as follows: Leave on Friday, usually on a minibus. Arrive at the destination hopefully by midday. The first runners start from a certain point and, equipped with maps and mobile phones, arrive at the next point where they finish their leg and ‘hand over’ to another pair. Each leg can vary from 3 to 10 miles depending on terrain, runners involved and how many miles already ran on the weekend. The weekend is not designed to be a race, just an enjoyable relay run at a slower pace. The organiser usually builds in a factor for the gradient of the run when deciding on the expected time for each leg. Friday night is spent drinking in some local hostelry! Accommodation is normally in Youth Hostels. The Saturday follows the same format as Friday but starts earlier. Some of the earliest runners miss out on the cooked breakfast, unlucky! Saturday night is spent drinking in some local hostelry! The Sunday run follows the same format but we try and finish early in order to arrive back in Warrington at a reasonable time. All runners normally run the last mile together and finish with a photo at the end. Recent runs have included the Pennine Way, the Ebor Way, round Anglesey, Hadrian's Wall and a run round the Isle of Man. 2006 Event: This year we stayed in the Corris Hostel in the mid Wales region, at £49 which included 2 nights accommodation, 2 breakfasts, 2 packed lunches, 1 evening meal for the Friday evening and a mini bus. We went to the local pub on the Saturday evening for a meal.
Last year the event was held following Hadrians wall. A good weekends
running was had by all (except myself who was under doctor's orders not to
run!). No cows encountered this year but I believe Joe went looking for a
few. Again we saw some stunning scenery including the wall stretching away
in the distance, rolling hills in Northumberland and a quaint finish place
in Maryport harbour. We were even greeted by the Mayor.
Many thanks to the organisers who put in quite a few hours plotting the legs,
route and pairings.
